Following dialogue with representatives of the two major Birth Registries operating in Europe, EUROCAT and the International Clearing House Birth Defects Monitoring System (ICBDMS), a dataset of occurrence of European oral clefts birth defects has now been compiled. This data has been used to categorise geographic areas according to birth prevalence of cleft palate (CP) and cleft lip and palate (CL/P). Colour coded maps have been created which indicate high to low birth prevalence. There are plans to expand this in the near future to include other craniofacial anomalies, and this European CFA occurrence dataset will be updated annually. Close links with the WHO registries project, based at the ICBD, are being developed and will guide the further development of this data.
