Speech Project > Background

Background

Although minimum standards have been suggested in term of the type of speech material to be collected when assessing cleft speech very little has been written about how to collect the data and document it (ACPA, 1993; Shaw et al 2000). Eliciting and documentation of speech data within countries and around the world can easily differ in a number of ways, all influencing the result of the assessment, which jeopardizes the validity of speech outcome comparisons (Grunwell & Sell, 2001; Lohmander & Olsson 2004).

These webpages were created in order to disseminate the recommendations by the Eurocleft network about ages for assessment (Shaw et al 2000). They were also devised for sharing information from the Scandcleft project (International multicenter trial) on how to collect, record and analyse cleft speech across different languages (Scandcleft project, 2003).
