The EUROCRAN Project

Background

The European Collaboration on Craniofacial Anomalies: EUROCRAN is a project funded by the European Commission (EC) under the Quality of Life theme of Framework Programme V.

Scope

EUROCRAN has a duration of four years 2000-2004, and is co-ordinated by the University of Manchester. EUROCRAN brings together researchers from a range of clinical / scientific disciplines from 19 European centres with the shared aim of improving the management and understanding of craniofacial anomalies (CFA). This will be achieved through inter-related research projects. These current research projects include clinical research projects and genetics research projects.

Goals

The main project has established a rapidly increasing network of clinical and scientific CFA researchers. It was agreed that a mechanism for promoting and facilitating information exchange across this growing network was needed and that this could best be provided through the development of a multifunctional interactive project website.

The goals of the website are to enable:

  • new centres / countries to participate in CFA research by providing a European Directory of Resources as a central information bank for professionals and patients;

  • centres remote from one another, to compare clinical outcomes and prepare for partnerships in future clinical trials through access to a web-based Clinical Outcomes Library;

  • more efficient access to, and exchange of information on, the progress of identifying genetic loci and environmental risk factors associated with craniofacial anomalies via links to various Genetic Databases.
